today i was approved for life insurance and got the best rate possible based upon a review of my medical records, a blood test, a urine test (which i studied for), a weigh-in, an interview, etc.
my underwriting group is "elite preferred non-tobacco." here's how much more my annual premiums would have been (in % terms) if i got slotted into the other categories, and how much i'll save over the life of a 20yr policy:
super preferred non-tobacco: 24%, $4,200
preferred non-tobacco: 76%, $13,200
non-tobacco: 136%, $23,400
preferred tobacco: 331%, $57,000
tobacco: 463%, $79,800
i spoke to three firms in this process. one of the guys, who i did not choose, told me that there was no way i'd get slotted into the best category given my parents' medical histories (father: died of heart attack at 53, mother: breast cancer survivor). i guess he was wrong.
